The Park Today

Brooklyn Bridge Park is now a reality
and the beginnings have already become a treasured urban oasis.  Offering spectacular views of downtown Manhattan and the New York Harbor, the Brooklyn Bridge Park "Main Street lot," Empire-Fulton Ferry and the soon-to-be-open Piers section of the park have attracted thousands of visitors.  These park sections are the setting for our programs and events, as well as picnics, ball play, daydreaming and much more.

Brooklyn Bridge Park "Main Street Lot"

Empire-Fulton Ferry
(Operated by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation)

The Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park is a premiere park space on the waterfront, established in 1978 by Governor Carey. The warehouses which line Water Street are the Empire Stores. The Tobacco Warehouse is a roofless structure that opens into the Park.

A note from the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation. Empire Fulton Ferry State Park will close as of January 1, 2010 as construction gets underway to implement a series of exciting park improvements. Improvements include:

• Jane’s Carousel, a gift of Jane and David Walentas. The magnificent, restored 1922 carousel will be housed in a beautiful pavilion designed by Pritzker-Prize winning architect Jean Nouvel, making the carousel available for use in all seasons.
• Stormwater retention tanks to irrigate the park’s natural features
• Park furnishings including railings, benches, picnic tables and bike racks
• Lighting so that the park will be open after dark for the first time since its opening in 1979
• Regrading the park to improve drainage

The scheduled reopening of the park is Spring 2011. The adjacent city park will remain open during the renovation. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation appreciates everyone’s patience as they make these improvements to Empire Fulton Ferry and work diligently to open Pier 1 of Brooklyn Bridge Park as early in 2010 as possible.

 Pier 1
(Operated by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation)

Pier 1 will add 6 new acres of park including 1,300 feet of promenade along the East River, and 2.5 acres of lawn with sweeping views of the New York harbor, the Manhattan skyline, and the Brooklyn Bridge. A dramatic granite prospect made from the stone salvaged from the Roosevelt Island Bridge will cascade from the two lawns to the 30’ wide waterfront promenade and will serve as a tiered viewing deck for park visitors. Also included is a small playground with swings, spring rockers, and stainless steel climbing domes for young children. New to the park will be Pier 1’s landscaped lawns. This new green space will create a breathtaking new focal point for park activities.

Scheduled Opening: Winter 2010

 Pier 6
(Operated by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation)

Located at the foot of Atlantic Avenue, Pier 6 will add approximately 7 acres of new park, including a 1.6 acre destination playground. The play areas will include a “swing valley” built along the southern edge of the pier featuring long rope swings, a “slide mountain” with two-story high slides that empty into a large sand box with stone animals , a water-play are, climbing structure, and a “boulder mountain.”

A 30’ wide promenade leading onto Pier 6 will feature views of lower Manhattan and New York Harbor. A park concession building with a  1000-square-foot restaurant and roof top deck, three sand volleyball courts, and a dog run will also be constructed. Plans are underway for a new water taxi dock at Pier 6 that will offer direct service between Brooklyn Bridge Park and Governor’s Island.

Scheduled Opening: Early Spring 2010
