About the Conservancy
and Brooklyn Bridge Park
An alliance
of more than 60 civic, community, and environmental groups, the Brooklyn
Bridge Park Conservancy has worked since 1989 to create a 1.3 mile-long
park on the Brooklyn waterfront, from the Manhattan Bridge, under the
Brooklyn Bridge and south to Atlantic Avenue. The Conservancy united
elected officials and community residents in support of the 70-acre Park
and worked with the Downtown Brooklyn Waterfront Local Development
Corporation to develop a community-created master plan, completed in
2000. In
May 2002, Governor Pataki and
Mayor Bloomberg signed a
Memorandum of Understanding,
which created the
Brooklyn Bridge Park
Development Corporation (BBPDC) and provided funding for
the design and construction of the
Park.
See the
milestones page
for a timeline of major Park events.
MISSION
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy is an independent
citizens organization that supports the development of a world-class
park along the New York City waterfront through advocacy, fundraising,
and innovative programming.
